Gifting Protective Eyewear to Children with Retinoblastoma

Our Mission

Our mission is singular: to purchase protective eyewear for kids impacted by retinoblastoma. The proper protective eyewear is expensive, and insurance companies typically do not cover these glasses.

We have now gifted 400 pairs of glasses, thanks to your generous donations.

Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer of the eye that strikes 250-300 children in the U.S. each year. These kids and their families have many challenges, including protecting the child's eyes from further injury.  Some of these kids are undergoing chemotherapy or other treatments to their eyes.  Other kids have lost their eye to save their lives.  Kids who have only one eye are eight times more likely to injure or even lose their eye.  Taking precautions to prevent total blindness is critical.

Specs for Little Heroes is an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization. (http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Charitable-Organizations/Exemption-Requirements---Section-501(c)(3)-Organizations).

Know the Glow

If you ever notice a white glare or a "cat like reflection" in your child's eye or if you see a white eye instead of a red eye in a photograph this could be a sign of retinoblastoma.  See a pediatric opthalmologist immediately! Ask your pediatrician to shut out the lights and check your child's eye with a flashlight to confirm a red reflection, a sign of a healthy retina.  It only takes 10 seconds and is so important for early diagnosis.
